Past President's Event - 2

The Dirigio II was the site of this year's Past Presidents' event.

The tranquil breezes of the Long Beach Marina welcomed LABS members and friends who gathered for the annual Past Presidents’ event on Saturday.

The historic sailing schooner the  Dirigio II played host to LABS’ historic past-presidents and guests. Hosted by Patrick Griffith, LABS President in 2008, and with tremendous support from Frances and Bill Garrett, the evening was packed with twilight tours of the luminescent marina, wine tasting (results below!), music and a bountiful buffet dinner. The wine tasting was also a successful fundraising event supporting CWEA’s Kirk Brooks Scholarship fund.

In honor of those LABS Past Presidents in attendance, each had their own “unique” wine label placed on a randomly-selected bottle in the wine tasting. Be sure to leave a comment below in your favorite “brand” of Past-President label!

Over 30 bottles of wine were available to be sampled for the event. In a shocking win, the famous Charles Shaw (Two Buck Chuck!) received the second highest number of votes for their Shiraz and was the night’s winning domestic red. The Charles Shaw label was concealed by the Bogdanoff’s Bodacious Biological Bioslime label.

The winning wines:

  • Overall Most Votes – Chateau St. Michelle, Riesling, 2008, Washington State – LABS purchased and sporting the “Low’s Luminescent Leachate” label
  • Best Red Domestic – Charles Shaw, Shiraz, 2007 – LABS Purchased
  • Best Red Import – Penfolds Koonunga Hill, Shiraz, 2007, LABS Purchased
  • Best White Domestic – Pancake Cellars, White Blend, 2007, Pasos Robles -  Amanda Schmidt, RMC Water & Environment
  • Best White Import – Reuilly, Sauvignon Blanc, 2007, France – Marjorie Boone, JoshuaCasey Corporate Training

In the Domestic Red category Mark Pettit’s Rodney Strong, Pinot Noir, 2007 from Sonoma County was a strong runner-up to the Two Buck Chuck, but fell just a couple votes shy.
