Join your WEFTEC friends as we pedal to raise awareness and funds to support Water For People. In the three years, we have raised over $10,000. We are able to raise money by the generosity of our sponsors who pay to have their logo printed on the back of our event T-Shirt.

A great ride is planned for 2011. We will start at Bikes and Hikes in West Hollywood and pedal through Bel Aire and Beverly Hills. We’ll ride 10 miles through jaw dropping neighborhood as we pass many celebrity homes, take in the sights and scents of world class gardens, and ride along the infamous Sunset Boulevard. During the ride, we’ll park our bikes and take a foot tour of Rodeo Drive and Greystone Mansion. For the serious cyclists, a hammerhead option along Mulholland Drive in the Santa Monica Mountains will be offered. All rides will be guided by professional tour guides from Bikes and Hikes LA (www.bikesandhikesla.com).

All participants will be provided with a multi-speed, fully suspended hybrid bicycle, vest, helmet and fluids. We will receive a colorful T-Shirt with the logo of our sponsors on the back of the T-Shirt. Registration will close on September 30 or when we reach 75 riders.

Participants should wear comfortable shirts and pants. Closed-toed shoes are required. Remember to bring sunscreen. Depending upon the weather, a light wind breaker may be needed. We will be arranging transportation from downtown LA to the bicycle shop and return. We will provide details of the transportation later.

After you have registered, George Patrick will contact you by email to obtain your T-Shirt size, your bike preference and other specific information. If you have questions, please contact George Patrick by email (georgepatrickatl@bellsouth.net) or 404/434-2149. If your company is interested in sponsoring the ride, please contact George Patrick.

Please join us to visit the Burbank Water Reclamation Plant (BWRP), where BWRP and LABS SYPC (California Water Environment Association Los Angeles Basin Section  Students & Young Professional Committee)  are hosting a facility tour introducing City of Burbank’s full scale wastewater treatment and reclamation processes.

BWRP is a tertiary wastewater treatment plant that currently treats 9 million gallons of sewage per day (MGD). The BWRP was built in 1966 to meet the wastewater and sewer needs of the growing residential population and expanding commercial industries located in the City of Burbank. Originally built to treat 6 MGD, the City upgraded the BWRP to the current 9 MGD in 1971. The plant was upgraded in 2000 to ensure that its meets new stringent regulations raising the quality of the cleaned wastewater it discharges after the treatment process. The plant was upgraded again in 2002 to remove ammonia from the wastewater.

Time:        September 27, Tuesday 8:30-10am
Venue:     740 North Lake Street, Burbank CA
RSVP:       nicole.you@lacity.org
Parking:   On Lake Street, entrance of the plant is at Lake & Chestnut

We have been asked by LABS member Michael Simpson of the City of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles African American Engineers Association (AAEA) to support a fantastic outreach program for students.

When: Saturday, May 14, 2011
Where: City of Los Angeles facility near USC (send email for more info)
Why: To help 250 high school students and young adults to discover the importance of engineering and the terrific job opportunities available in our industry.

The theme this year is the water-energy nexus. That’s us!

LABS will sponsor this important outreach event. We encourage your company to get involved and help inspire these young people to become professional engineers and scientists – maybe even to work in the clean water industry.

Michael is looking for two types of support:
1.  Corporate volunteers to man outreach tables featuring interactive, hands-on science based activities with the students.    For example using a 2-liter bottle to make a water filter. Explain your job, your company and the importance of engineering.
2.  Sponsors to cover food, giveaways and prizes.

Whatever you can do to help, LABS and Michael would greatly appreciate it. Please contact him at michael.simpson@lacity.org

ET 240 Solid Waste Management Applications course being offered this spring semester.

The course is Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7:00pm to 10:00pm, and it will be taught by the supervisors from the LA County Sanitation Districts solid waste department.

Your instructors will also take you on field trips to the various solid waste sites. The class received great reviews last Spring.  Please try to pre-register, but if you are having difficulty adding the class, please feel free contact me at (562) 463-7501 or skatnik@riohondo.edu

ET 240: This course is designed to provide individuals, who are working in or seek employment in the solid waste management field, with an overview of the solid waste industry and its components. Emphasis is placed on the various aspects of integrated waste management including: waste prevention, recycling, composting, incineration, landfilling, environmental sampling and monitoring, facility siting and permitting, and compliance with environmental, health and safety regulations.

The 2011 WEF Wastewater Challenge is a national competition that’s both
challenging and fun. This hands-on competition requires teams of students to
build a wastewater treatment system from an assortment of household products
in an effort to protect a sensitive wetland ecosystem from being
contaminated. This event offers students an opportunity to compete and
problem solve with fellow students from schools throughout North America.
Please help share the news of this event to your student chapters.

The competition will take place in Sacramento, California, at the 2011 WEF
Residuals and Biosolids Conference on May 25, 2011, at the Sacramento
Convention Center. To be eligible to compete, your team must submit a Design
Report to the WEF Students and Young Professionals Wastewater Challenge
Sub-Committee, and the top 12 teams will be selected to compete. The
deadline to submit reports for entry is April 1, 2011, at 5 PM PST. There
is a limit of one team per student chapter. The WEF Wastewater Challenge
Guidelines provide complete details on how to participate in this event.
Information is also posted on wef.org under the Public Information/College
Students. A monetary award will be presented to the top two teams. The
Case Scenario below provides a brief look at the challenge at hand.

A. Case Scenario
A 200 acre Biosolids Compost Facility that has 100,000 cubic yards of
composting, curing, and finished compost on site sits next to an earthen
levee and just up-gradient from a sensitive wetland type ecosystem. The
levee is expected to breach and for several hours 5,000 CFS of agricultural
runoff and snow melt will run through the site with the normal runoff
controls getting overloaded. It is expected that most of this now further
contaminated water will reach the site fence line and if not stopped or
successfully treated will devastate the wetland. The Army Corps of Engineers
will be repairing the breach within 12 hours and therefore the solution to
the problem should be considered temporary. The natural slope of the
facility would channel the flow to an area of no more than 100 yards wide at
the fence line.

Your team has been asked to design a system to control and treat the runoff
for solids, nutrients and bacteria before releasing it to the wetland, if
necessary. You are asked to design a system to control and mitigate the
nutrient rich water, and you and your team will be asked to construct and
run the emergency water treatment system component of the overall design at
the competition to demonstrate the system’s removal efficiencies. The
overall design will have to demonstrate the control strategies and removal
efficiencies of your system, in addition to the emergency water treatment
system.

Within the sludge of wastewater treatment plants is an invisible world teeming with microbes. Here, diverse species of bacteria convert solid and liquid wastes into gases, some of which contribute to global warming.

Now two Stanford University engineers are developing a new sewage treatment process that would actually increase the production of two greenhouse gases – nitrous oxide (aka, “laughing gas”) and methane – and use the gases to power the treatment plant.
