Join your WEFTEC friends as we pedal to raise awareness and funds to support Water For People. In the three years, we have raised over $10,000. We are able to raise money by the generosity of our sponsors who pay to have their logo printed on the back of our event T-Shirt.

A great ride is planned for 2011. We will start at Bikes and Hikes in West Hollywood and pedal through Bel Aire and Beverly Hills. We’ll ride 10 miles through jaw dropping neighborhood as we pass many celebrity homes, take in the sights and scents of world class gardens, and ride along the infamous Sunset Boulevard. During the ride, we’ll park our bikes and take a foot tour of Rodeo Drive and Greystone Mansion. For the serious cyclists, a hammerhead option along Mulholland Drive in the Santa Monica Mountains will be offered. All rides will be guided by professional tour guides from Bikes and Hikes LA (www.bikesandhikesla.com).

All participants will be provided with a multi-speed, fully suspended hybrid bicycle, vest, helmet and fluids. We will receive a colorful T-Shirt with the logo of our sponsors on the back of the T-Shirt. Registration will close on September 30 or when we reach 75 riders.

Participants should wear comfortable shirts and pants. Closed-toed shoes are required. Remember to bring sunscreen. Depending upon the weather, a light wind breaker may be needed. We will be arranging transportation from downtown LA to the bicycle shop and return. We will provide details of the transportation later.

WET Designs Party

On Friday June 24th Sun Valley based fountain company WET Designs hosted a party and booksigning for author Charles Fishman who just released The Big Thirst. Proceeds from books sold at the event were donated to Water for People Los Angeles and the vent raised nearly $600.

WET was featured in one of the chapters of Charles’ new book where he talks about our strong emotional bonds to water – the joy of jumping into a swimming pool or playing on a slip-n-slide or watching a water fall. WET’s fountains make water playful, fun and interactive.

Started in 1983 by designer Mark Fuller, WET designs is now an internationally acclaimed designer of fountains and water features including several famous ones here in Los Angeles:  the dancing fountains at The Grove; the fountain you can walk through in the Music Center Courtyard; the water feature at the California Center; the wave fountain at Fashion Island in Newport Beach; the Gas Co. Tower’s lobby and more.

One of WET’s first signature designs is the laminar stream – a perfect arc of glassy water that looks like it is suspended in mid-air. The technology behind the arc was Mark’s university thesis – axisymmetric laminar flow.

The facility in Sun Valley includes the factory, administrative offices, engineering offices and a large “playground” where WET designers pulled out several interactive fountains for the partygoers to experience. Over 200 people work in the complex of offices.  From their catalog:

The 192-member Assembly also called on United Nations Member States and international organizations to offer funding, technology and other resources to help poorer countries scale up their efforts to provide clean, accessible and affordable drinking water and sanitation for everyone.

The Assembly resolution received 122 votes in favour and zero votes against, while 41 countries abstained from voting.

The text of the resolution expresses deep concern that an estimated 884 million people lack access to safe drinking water and a total of more than 2.6 billion people do not have access to basic sanitation. Studies also indicate about 1.5 million children under the age of five die each year and 443 million school days are lost because of water- and sanitation-related diseases.

Today’s resolution also welcomes the UN Human Rights Council’s request that Catarina de Albuquerque, the UN Independent Expert on the issue of human rights obligations related to access to safe drinking water and sanitation, report annually to the General Assembly as well.

Ms. de Albuquerque’s report will focus on the principal challenges to achieving the right to safe and clean drinking water and sanitation, as well as on progress towards the relevant Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The MDGs, a series of targets for reducing social and economic ills, all by 2015, includes the goals of halving the proportion of people who cannot reach or afford safe drinking water and halving the number who do not have basic sanitation.

In a related development, Ms. de Albuquerque issued a statement today after wrapping up a nine-day official visit to Japan in which she praised the country for its nearly universal access to water and sanitation and for its use of innovative technologies to promote hygiene and treat wastewater.

But the Independent Expert said she was shocked that some members of the Utoro community near Kyoto, where Koreans have been living for several generations, still do not have access to water from the public network.

“People are also not connected to the sewage network, despite the fact that the surrounding area is largely covered by sewage service,” she said. “When floods occur, as happened one year ago, the lack of sewage and proper evacuation of grey water result in contamination of the environment, including with human faeces, posing serious health concerns.

“I am also worried that water and sanitation are extremely expensive for some people living in Utoro, who reportedly do not have a right to receive a pension.”

On Saturday, December 5th, 2009, the Los Angeles and Orange County Chapters of Water For People (WFP) teamed up for a morning of exercise, education, and goodwill at the WFP Hike-A-Thon held at the scenic Upper Newport Bay. The successful charity event drew 55 hikers and raised $3,200 donated by hikers, corporate sponsors and supporters. This was the LA chapters second annual hike a thon.

Water For People combats water-related illness by helping communities in developing countries construct safe drinking water supplies and clean sanitation facilities, and through education outreach.

Upper Newport Bay is an estuary – a place where fresh and salt water meet and mix. It is one of only a few remaining estuaries in Southern California and is home to nearly 200 species of birds, including several endangered species, as well as numerous species of mammals, fish, and native plants. The bay is reminiscent of many of the ecologically rich venues where WFP carries out its life-saving mission.

WFP volunteers greeted hikers on the Back Bay Science Center patio and provided them with some pre-hike nourishment. An inspirational talk by Brook Yared highlighted his experience in Uganda assessing the water and sanitation needs of the local community. Brook stressed the gratitude that their hosts showed for the efforts made on their behalf.

The hikers donned blue balloons that symbolize the precious drops of clean drinking water that elude 2.1 billion people around the world. They then set out on the two trails mapped out for the hike totaling 3.6 miles. The WFP staff and volunteers are inspired by the enthusiastic support of the hikers and the knowledge that their financial contributions are used efficiently and effectively to improve the health and quality of life of the recipients of WFP programs in more than 10 countries.

Informative WFP placards and three quiz stations supplemented the picturesque hiking environment allowing participants to test their knowledge of water and sanitation issues. Colorful stickers were handed out for answering the challenge questions.

After the hike, many of the hikers visited the Back Bay Science Center which provides hands-on exhibits that teach about the estuarine ecology of Newport Bay, the marine ecology of the ocean, and the efforts to promote resource stewardship throughout the watershed.

The Hike-A-Thon was a perfect blend of scenic beauty, exercise (for people and pets), education, and compassion.
