Training Summary
Pick-up the critical skills necessary to understand P&ID documents in our increasingly high-tech and automated industry. Participants will acquire skills needed to differentiate between the interconnection of process equipment and the instrumentation used to control the process. Modules in the seminar are designed to allow participants to learn how to read and interpret the standard set of symbols used in processes instrumentation drawings and their applications in process system design.

Who Should Attend: Operators, maintenance personnel, design engineers, facility mangers and supervisors who would like more information about power and control systems used for the operations and monitoring of pumps.

What You Will Learn: It is important for operations and electrical maintenance personnel to fully understand the electrical system at each of the pump stations for which they are responsible. You should understand the function and operation of the overall system.

Discussion Topics will Include:

  • Typical power distribution
  • Various types of pump motor control including: variable speed and soft start
  • Trouble shooting and preventive maintenance
  • Station communication – status and alarms
  • Various methods for achieving optimum utilization of status and alarm conditions
  • The importance of understanding the operation of station’s electrical and control system by using the information available in the electrical and instrumentation operation systems

Based in Arizona, Dr. Trahern works with municipalities, wastewater authorities, and other consulting firms providing technical expertise and direction on pretreatment programs, wastewater process design and analysis and regulatory issues. While working at Malcolm Pirnie Dr. Trahern managed numerous local limits projects for municipalities and authorities in USEPA Region 9.

Dr. Trahern concurrently developed local limits guidance materials for USEPA Region 9. Recent projects include development of pretreatment programs for the City of Prescott, AZ and the City of Surprise, AZ and local limit updates for the City of Mesa, AZ and the City of Hopewell, VA. Dr. Trahern earned her Master’s and doctorate at Virginia Tech University.

CWEA needs Collection System Maintenance volunteers of different grade levels to review and revise the current test content areas (what’s on the CSM cert tests). There are two ways to be involved:
